Welcome to the world

Last night I became an aunt, which is to say, my sister had a baby. His name is Jonah, and he was born on January 21st, 2021.

There’s a lot going on in this world right now: pandemic, climate change, political unrest, economic instability, and growing inequality just to name a few.

I’m sure there are some good things going on too.

We don’t know what the future is going to be like. We can only see some trends and make predictions about what will happen if they continue, or don’t. But certainly many things are hidden from us. Things could get much worse. Things could get much better. Or, most likely, some of both.

It’s so odd to know that just 24 hours ago, Jonah was INSIDE of my sister. And now he’s a different person! He’s going to have hopes and dreams and sadnesses. One day, hopefully, he’ll be 31, writing a blog post. And I’ll be 62, maybe writing a blog post too.

I’m excited for him to experience the world. The smell of cinammon. Ice cream. Fluffy dogs. Fluffy kitties. Music. Dancing. Laughter. Friendship. Hugs. Crying. Falling in love. Breaking up. Despair. Hope. Connection. Willow trees.

The world is a complex place, and he is a complex being in it. I’m excited to get to know him and find out his take on all this mess.
